Nature-based solutions for water challenges (world water day 2018)

World Water Day was held in Mogadishu-Somalia on 22-03-2018, organized by Mogadishu University ‘Somali Center for Water & Environment’ and Somali Environmental Conservation ( SEC).  Each World Water Day is organized around the world and a theme that focuses attention is presented. The theme for 2018,is ‘Nature for Water’. This year’s theme explores how we can use nature to overcome the water challenges of the 21st century.

Environmental damage, together with climate change, is driving the water-related crises we see around the world. Floods, drought and water pollution are all made worse by degraded vegetation, soil, rivers and lakes.

Billions of rural people around the world spend every working day ‘connected to nature’ and appreciate full well their dependence on natural water supplies and how nature provides their livelihoods in the form of fertile soil. They are among the first to suffer when ecosystems are threatened, whether by pollution, climate change or over-exploitation.

The event was held at Mogadishu University conference hall and attended by guests including environmental activists, environmental academicians, civil society representatives and the administration of the collaborating institutions.

Some key speakers presented brief papers highlighting the importance of the water and environment for the life of human being and its surrounding ecosystem. It is followed by a roundtable debate whereby participants commented the issue and presented a lot of useful recommendations. Finally, the event was concluded with a call for preservation of Somali water and environment for the sustainability of human life.
