The “Climate Emergency Day on Accelerating Renewable Energy Transition in Somalia,” held at Astaan TV Main Hall on July 22, 2023, marked a significant stride in the discourse on renewable energy in Somalia. Jointly organized by A4E and GSI, the event convened over 300 notable participants, including four key speakers and eight panel guests, who delved into various aspects of renewable energy, ranging from policy and market dynamics to technological advancements and development opportunities. Central to the discussions were the climate emergency and energy crisis in Somalia, with a particular focus on the transformative potential of solar minigrids.

Profound insights were shared on the historical and current status of renewable energy, with Climate Clock Somalia’s co-leader, Mr. Adan Mohamed Aqli, emphasizing the critical need for transitioning to renewable energy. Panel discussions, spearheaded by key figures like Prof Hassan Warsame Nor and Minister Jama of the Ministry of Energy and Water Resource, alongside industry experts like Eng. Mohamed Warsame Hassan from Beca Electricity Company, enriched the dialogue, highlighting the technical and financial feasibility of renewable energy solutions and the essential role of hybridizing diesel minigrids with solar power.

The event underscored the urgency of shifting to renewable energy in Somalia, showcasing successful initiatives and identifying key challenges and barriers hindering the development and adoption of renewable energy solutions. Recommendations for fostering collaboration and partnership among stakeholders, including government, private sector, civil society, academia, and international organizations, were a significant outcome.

Prof Nor’s insights on global warming and climate change adaptation mechanisms were particularly impactful, aligning with the event’s theme of creating new opportunities and benefits from renewable energy development. The participation of diverse stakeholders, along with the interactive panel discussions, paved the way for a holistic understanding of renewable energy’s role in Somalia’s sustainable future.
