Championing Peace and Sustainability: A4E Peace Forum Highlights

In observance of the International Peace Day on September 21, 2022, Action for Environment, in collaboration with the Somali Greenpeace Association, organized an event with the theme “Climate Change, Peace, and Security Nexus in Somalia.” This youth-led session featured peace builders, climate activists, and security experts who shared their experiences and insights.

The event aimed to highlight the impact of climate change on peace and security, emphasizing the need to build community resilience and sustainable peace in the face of climate challenges. The event brought together community elders, civil society organizations, youth, women, and government officials in a hybrid format, fostering diverse perspectives and discussions.

During the event, participants engaged in dynamic panel discussions designed to explore the intricate connections between environmental degradation, resource scarcity, and conflict. Experts highlighted how climate-related challenges, such as droughts and flooding, exacerbate social tensions and can lead to disputes over resources like water and arable land. By establishing a dialogue around these issues, the session aimed to foster a deeper understanding of the role that sustainable environmental practices can play in promoting peace and security in Somalia. Attendees had the opportunity to share their own stories, creating a rich tapestry of lived experiences that underscored the urgency of integrating climate action into peacebuilding initiatives.

To further solidify the outcomes of the event, participants worked collaboratively to develop a series of actionable recommendations that can be implemented at community and governmental levels. These recommendations focused on improving resource management, enhancing disaster preparedness, and promoting educational programs that link climate awareness with peace initiatives. By empowering youth and community members to take an active role in addressing these challenges, the event sought to inspire a new generation of leaders who are equipped to tackle both environmental and social issues head-on. As the day concluded, it was clear that fostering cooperation between climate action and peacebuilding efforts is essential for creating a more sustainable and harmonious future for Somalia.
